Ryan Hoffman’s Hardwood

Functional to Fine Art

Ryan Hoffman

Ryan’s adventures with wood go back to early childhood when he fondly remembers working in the shop with his maternal grandfather (and occasionally sharing a cigarette). His great-grandfather also did carpentry and was a proficient clockmaker, so he feels like he is carrying on a family tradition through wood. From his first crude coffee table made, in his early 20’s as a quick functional piece, to the fine pieces he now creates using hand-made inlays, dovetail joints and precision-fit drawers, Ryan works with that collected (sometimes exotic) wood to create true works of art. He particularly is drawn to making boxes, which symbolize containment to him. He learned more advanced wood crafting skills
from YouTube after learning the basics from family. Wood makes him feel regret and connection: regret that he did not start woodworking sooner, and connection to his family, honoring them.

Memories & Inspiration: The Kerry and C. Betty Davis Collection of African American Art is organized and toured by International Arts & Artists.
