Art Education Community
Artistic Expressions is led by a proactive group of art educators who are passionate about developing the creative lives of students and engaging with the art education community. The mission of Artistic Expressions is to bring together local high school art students and connect them with valuable resources to further their artistic development.
Susquehanna Art Museum partners with Artistic Expressions to coordinate a week-long summer intensive program for advanced Harrisburg area high school students. This program provides rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors with access to working artists, educators, and community organizations to explore new artistic mediums, gain access to local arts institutions, and engage in conversations about contemporary art.
In the summer of 2023, students are invited to take an in-depth look at SAM’s exhibition Art and Activism at Tougaloo College, learn new material techniques, and explore concepts within their artwork. Together we will discuss Tougaloo’s legacy of combining the arts, community activism, and the pursuit of civil rights. Experienced art educators, community organizers, and SAM’s Director of Education will work hands-on with students to explore new ways of making art, the intersection of material and meaning, and discuss relevant art historical and social topics.
