Far Field

Kate Stewart’s current creative practice finds connections with research on brain activity during various states of consciousness, specifically the theta state of the brain during meditation, REM sleep and hypnosis. Characteristic of the theta state, brain wave frequencies slow down and the subject is often able to occupy a space between the conscious and the subconscious.

In the science of acoustics, ‘far field’ refers to how sound travels far beyond the original source; the farther away the sound waves travel, the more organized the waves become, forming parallel wave forms extending into space.

This scientific concept holds meaning for me, in relation to my experience during various kinds of meditative states. My visual synesthetic responses to thoughts, sounds and other auditory sensations extend beyond me and beyond the physical realm. This is what I try to capture in my paintings.
