Volunteering at SAM

Supporting SAM

Volunteers

Volunteers are an integral part of the Museum’s operation, and volunteering can be applied to community service hours. There are four different volunteer roles with SAM at the Marty: Gallery Host, Front Desk Attendant, VanGo! Assistant, and Education Assistant.

Gallery Host

As a Gallery Host, you will be responsible for gallery safety in the Lehr Gallery, the main exhibition space. This position includes welcoming visitors, monitoring the gallery, and, occasionally, kindly reminding visitors of museum policies, such as refraining from touching artworks or from taking flash photographs. In this role, you are able to sit at a provided desk or chair and only occasionally need to walk around the gallery space. You will not have to perform any heavy lifting or stand for extended periods of time.
This is not a docent role. Visitors may ask general questions about the artwork, but you are not responsible for giving tours. Information about the artwork is provided.

Experience in customer service, hospitality, or education is recommended, but not required. Must be at least 15 years old and have some prior work or volunteer experience.

This role has a flexible, self-designed schedule. There are shifts available everyday that the museum is open: weekdays, weekends, and evenings.

Front Desk Attendant

As the Front Desk Attendant, you be responsible for greeting visitors, operating the register, and relaying information. This position also includes monitoring the Lobby gallery and informing visitors of museum policies, such as refraining from touching artworks or from taking flash photographs. In this role, you will be seated at the front desk in the Lobby gallery, but may need to stand to direct visitors. You will not have to perform any heavy lifting.

Experience in customer service, hospitality, or similar is required. Must be at least 18 years old and have some prior work experience.

This role has a regular weekly schedule. Volunteers select an available shift and cover the same time each week. Shifts are during regular open hours on Wednesday (10am to 7pm), Thursday (10am to 5pm), and Friday (10am to 5pm). Additional shifts are occasionally available during the week on an as-needed basis.

VanGO! Assistant

VanGO! assistants share the love of art with children and adults of all ages by assisting with classes and events aboard SAM’s mobile museum, the VanGO!. Due to this position’s nature, volunteers must be 18 years old, have clearances to work with children, and availability on weekdays during the school day. No prior art knowledge is necessary, but some travel will be required.

Education Assistant

Education assistants are contacted on an as-needed basis, and clearances to work with children are usually required. Education volunteers may serve as an assistant to a class instructor, or help with set-up/break down of educational events such as lectures, artist talks, or other special events.

Education volunteers must be at least 18 years old, and experience in art education is preferred.
