This selection of Valery Sutherland’s otherworldly compositions, completed between 2021 and 2023, illustrate the artist’s investigation into the passage of time and its reflection on nature. Elemental symbols are represented alongside man-made structures and geometric shapes, revealing the changing relationship between humanity and the natural world.
In recent years, Sutherland, who lives in Connecticut in a house surrounded by the forest, began photographing the trees and sky that she sees every day around her home. She takes inspiration from the organic shapes found in nature, like cloud patterns, a tangle of branches, or the textures found in wood after using a log splitter. She digitally manipulates the photographs and uses them as source material for her surreal paintings that combine technology and nature.
Sutherland has exhibited her artwork throughout New England, New Jersey, and the greater New York area for over thirty years. She studied art in England at Tunbridge Wells Art School and with David Cashman at St. Martin’s Art School.
