Mythologies of Motherhood

Mythologies of Motherhood chronicles personal stories of artists currently raising children. Artwork included draws attention to the disparities between the “ideals” of motherhood and the realities of family dynamics. This exhibition makes space for celebrating, commiserating, laughing, and reflecting upon the development of personal mythologies in our motherhood experiences.

Guest curator Alison Elizabeth Keener selected these pieces from the To Give Rise To artist collective. The collective exists to encourage mothers who are working artists and mothers who want to reconnect with their artistic self. To Give Rise To kindles the creative flame while supporting a holistic studio-life balance, honoring the choice to remain deep in the trenches of raising children. They believe that motherhood is not an end to creativity, but a new source for inspiration in making art.

Guest curator Alison Elizabeth Keener is graciously supporting Anthracite Creative Works in conjunction with Mythologies of Motherhood. Keener and Susquehanna Art Museum have donated to this regional cultural institution on behalf of the artists in this exhibition. Anthracite Creative Works is a visual arts studio that provides art instruction, events, and displays of fine art in the coal region of Pennsylvania. It was founded by artist and mother Phoebe Heath, who is dedicated to balancing both important roles in her life and supporting artists who do the same. Anthracite Creative Works sustained a devastating fire in December 2021, and donated funds will support their renovation and reopening.
