Artists have long been at the forefront of social change through revolutionary and, at times, subversive means of transcending both physical and hidden boundaries. Contemporary art often acts as a mirror for barriers within all societies, challenging viewers to confront oppressive social, political, or cultural divisions. Can art be the catalyst to break down these confines? What barricades have you encountered that have impacted not only your work as an artist, but your life and belief system as well? Art & Barriers pays homage to all artists who daily break through limitations of any kind.
Art & Barriers is a juried group exhibition on view at the State Museum of Pennsylvania from July 20 – December 7 2014. During the Susquehanna Art Museum’s transitional period into our new location in Midtown, Harrisburg, we are continuing to collaborate with area arts organizations for exhibitions and educational programming space.

Jurors
Bryson Leidich
Bryson Leidich is a photographer with 45 years experience in a wide variety of image making. He has worked with digital imaging for over 20 years. While Photoshop is Bryson’s favorite place to play, his passion is the image itself. Bryson’s photographs run from realistic to abstract, and he appreciates personal creativity in imaging.  The result should be that the viewer can accept without question the visual premise of the image presented by the artist. Bryson has received awards from Kodak and Fuji and numerous professional competitions. He has judged for amateur and professional competitions, and for Susquehanna Art Museum and Doshi. He has exhibited personal work in Doshi shows in the past few years.
Kim Banister
Kim Banister is an artist who draws large scale figures. Her work, charcoal, powered pigment and linseed oil, is gestural with single figures or multiple figures entwined. Banister has shown her work nationally. She is the gallery curator at Harrisburg Area Community College and teaches in the art department. Banister received a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Cincinnati and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dickinson College. In 2012, she was awarded a fellowship at the AAMG/Kellogg Academic Museum and Gallery Leadership Seminar at Northwestern University.
Lauren Nye
Lauren Nye is an artist and curator currently located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Though her sculptural work includes a variety of media from bronze to paper, the central concepts remain focused on intimacy, the body, and the deterioration of all materials over time. She was the Gallery Manager at Isadore Gallery and the Arts Program Director at Gallery360, both in Lancaster, PA. Notable residencies include the 2010 Sculpture Artist in Residence at Millersville University and 2011 Summer Artist in Residence at the Nyholm Foundation in Denmark. Â Since 2013 she has been the Exhibitions Manager at the Susquehanna Art Museum.
