The Matter of Money

Mark Wagner is best known for his intricate collages made entirely from deconstructed US dollars. Decades dedicated to destroying banknotes has provided Wagner with a unique perspective on the nature of money. In this exhibition of his work, he invites viewers to examine their relationship with money and its meaning within politics, power, American Identity, and everyday life.

Mark Wagner’s work can be found in the collections of numerous art institutions including the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, and the Museum of Modern Art. His work has been exhibited extensively, including at The Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Research Institute, and National Portrait Gallery. He has also been featured in Time Magazine, Newsweek, Harpers, and Art in America as well as on CBS, and PBS. Originally from rural Wisconsin, Wagner received his BFA from University of Wisconsin Madison in 1995. He now resides with his family in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
