This anniversary exhibition celebrates 10 years of Susquehanna Art Museum in the historic midtown neighborhood of Harrisburg. Since its opening ten years ago, SAM has featured the work of local, regional, national, and internationally recognized artists pursuant to its mission to educate, inspire, and foster creative exploration, collaboration, and community engagement.
SAM History
In 1989, Susquehanna Art Museum, the vision of a group of Pennsylvania educators, was initially introduced to the capital city community as a “Museum Without Walls”. Without a home site, the founding board members and supporters showcased art in community locations. SAM’s walls emerged, first in Strawberry Square and subsequently in the Kunkel Building in downtown Harrisburg. In these locations, the Museum added art classes, lectures, an art-related book group, and space for the Doshi Gallery, which featured local artists. After two decades, Susquehanna Art Museum found its permanent home in Midtown Harrisburg on Third Street in the former Keystone Trust Bank building, built in 1923. The art museum opened with its first exhibitions in January of 2015.
