Housing: Pennsylvania Dwellings Observed

Lou Schellenberg

Inspired by a passion for being outdoors, Lou Schellenberg’s process starts with observing architecture, dwellings, and yards while walking around small, tightly knit communities.

Initially stopped by an emotional and visual connection to a particular painting spot, she becomes intrigued by the intersection of public and private space, and the boundaries created between human-made structures and nature.

Architecture, roads, and spaces in-between dwellings present stories that become apparent through the process of observation and repeated plein air sessions. Schellenberg responds to patterns of habitat and sees beauty in ordinary overlooked moments as she knits together a visual experience focusing on color, light and content.

In this exhibition of her work, Schellenberg invites viewers to respond to patterns of habitat and change in small towns, suburbs, and rural communities and to the human story behind every dwelling and built boundary.
